osteopathy and POSTNATAL

Eastern Osteopathy Melbourne is the best postnatal Osteopathic clinic near you in Melbourne. Our focus is not just on your post-birth related pain but also on preventing long-term implications that can be caused by imbalances in your body after pregnancy and birth. We have exceptionally trained osteopaths in the areas of post-birth related pain and postnatal care.

HOW CAN OSTEO HELP POST-LABOUR?

Although labour is a natural process, it is physically demanding and can place great strain on the mother’s body. The position of the pelvis and sacrum is easily altered during childbirth because the ligaments of the pelvis are in such a relaxed state. This can not only create local and short-term discomfort in your lower back and pelvis, but it can also have long-term implications as the rest of your body compensates for the imbalance.

It is common for new mums to experience the following pains postpartum:

  • Lower back and pelvis pain.

  • Pelvic girdle and pubic symphysis pain.

  • Mid back pain during and after breastfeeding.

  • Neck pain and headaches.

  • Wrist pain.

Osteopathic treatment post birth can help resolve any strains present, relieving pain and discomfort and helping to prevent any long-term issues.

Our osteopaths are also highly skilled in helping with sensitization and scar treatment of cesarean birth, perineal trauma and episiotomies scars. We have found these scars can have lasting effects on the musculoskeletal system and can impact pain and function of the surrounding muscles and joints.

RETURN TO RUNNING AFTER HAVING A BABY ASSESSMENT.

Mia (external) and Kathryn (internal and external component) perform our return to running assessment. Their assessment is derived from international guidelines outlined by a group of physiotherapists. This guideline is used around the world and involves internal assessment of the pelvic floor and looking for prolapse symptoms. External components of the assessment involve;

  • Diastasis assessment

  • Load transfer

  • Balance

  • Impact strategies

  • Lower limb strength

  • Breathing strategies.

Once each area is assessed, a specific program is written to help get you back to running.

SIX WEEK PELVIC FLOOR ASSESSMENT

Kathryn, Nicole, Geetha, Meg & Lara are only a handful of osteopaths in Australia trained in internal assessment of the pelvic floor.

Our osteopaths are considered leaders in the areas of Pelvic Health and Osteopathy in Australia, They are passionate about completing a thorough 6 week postpartum pelvic floor assessment. This assessment will include an internal assessment of the pelvic floor looking not only at strength but timing, coordination and any tension of the pelvic floor muscles. They will also assess for pelvic organ prolapse, diastasis recti and any scar treatment required. After the assessment our osteopaths will work out a specific treatment specific for your needs and treatment goals. She often works with Mia in designing your pelvic floor rehabilitation program.

When it comes to pelvic floor dysfunction we believe the pelvic floor is a piece of the puzzle but not the whole picture and our treatment and exercise prescription reflects this.

MASTITIS AND BREAST TREATMENT

All of our osteopaths have completed further training in the treatment of mastitis and blocked ducts using the ultrasound. They combine the use of the ultrasound with manual techniques to the breast tissue to get the most effective results. As osteopaths we always come back to the patient as a whole and believe when helping people with mastitis this is essential, treatment will also involve treatment to the ribs, nerve supply to the breast and working with the fascia and joints that impact the breast and rib cage. We also educate our patients on self massage techniques and movement practices to help prevent recurrence.

PRE AND POSTNATAL PILATES

Eastern Osteopathy is proud to have Mia Di Ciccio working at the clinic. Mia is an osteopath and has also completed matwork, equipment and pre and post natal pilates training with APPI. Mia works closely with our other osteopaths to help design functional programs to help you gain or maintain core and pelvic floor strength and fitness.

Our osteopaths have a passion for treating and supporting people through their entire pregnancy journey and beyond. They have a great understanding of the anatomy and biomechanics of the continuously changing pregnant body and the impact delivery and parenthood has on the body. This knowledge and understanding allows us to compassionately treat and support you through all stages of your pregnancy and beyond. Read more about pilates in the pre and postnatal period here.
